Description of QALICB
The Biomedical Research Foundation of Northwest Louisiana (BRF) is the region’s most comprehensive provider of medical imaging services such as PET/CT scans. BRF required funding for their brand-new Center for Molecular Imaging Therapy (CMIT) facility. BRF, founded in 1986, has provided PET/CT scans since 1995, to a largely impoverished patient base, where 70% of patients rely on Medicare/Medicaid and 15% are uninsured.
Community Benefits
BRF and the CMIT will improve the overall health of northern Louisiana by providing advanced research, increased access to healthcare and promoting more economic development in the area. BRF and CMIT will continue to offer medical services to community members in need, either free of charge or on a sliding scale based on a patient’s ability to pay. The State of Louisiana has higher cancer rates than the national averages, due to the exposure to toxins from certain industrial practices. These practices had adverse effects on the environment, community, their workers and nearby residents. The new CMIT is set to be a 16,000 SF state-of-the-art facility that will house imaging technology that exists in only one other facility in the country, advancing cancer and medical research for the entire country.
